SPECIAL AWARD PRESENTED TO THE DIRECTOR OF THE MACK

We are Proud to announce that Janice Grizzard, Executive Director of the MACK was presented with The President's Call to Service Award for 2007.  It consisted of two letters, a certificate and a beautiful lapel pin.

The letter on behalf of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation recognized her dedication to volunteer service and signified that she served her community and country with distinction.  They noted that her volunteer efforts demonstrated values that make our nation strong and are helping to build a culture of citizenship, service and responsibility in America

Janice also received a letter from President Bush.  He congratulated Janice on answering the call to serve others at home as well as abroad.  He went on to state that Americans continue to serve and are part of the gathering momentum of millions of acts of kindness and decency that are changing American, one heart and one soul at a time.  Janice continues to contribute to this change.

We are fortunate to have such a dedicated, conscientious and caring person as the Director of the McCormick Arts Council.

The MACK Makes a Difference in McCormick

By Lynda Macaluso

When Janice Grizzard, Exexcutive Director of the McCormick Arts Council at the Keturah (MACK) addressed the Lions Club, she listed some of the advantages of exposure to the arts.  Children who participate in the arts make higher grades in school and grow up to be more productive adults.  An arts based education builds skills, builds self-esteem, lowers juvenile crime and instills a desire to learn.  It also helps “level the playing field” for children from disadvantaged circumstances such as low income homes, foster homes, and abusive homes.

The MACK is constantly trying to engage all of the community in its programs.  In the last year, it provided over 850 hours of professional instruction in music and art to students of all ages.  The youth Summer Arts Camp enrollment grew by forty-seven per cent.  “Read and Feed”, a book discussion group which shares ideas over dinner each month, has about thirty “regulars”.  The MACK made it possible for all second graders in McCormick to receive a copy of My Favorite Book, a book about manners and the importance of family and community.

Through the Arts in Education Program, Native American basket weaver Nancy Basket was brought in to do workshops at the MACK and in the McCormick Schools.  She is a nationally known weaver whose pieces can sell for as much as $6,000 in the Charleston area.   An Accessibility Grant allowed artists Chris and Frank McMullen and Helen Hutson to provide art classes for special needs students.

The second floor of the MACK now houses working studio space for five artists, and the Archive Room there is manned by a volunteer fifteen hours per week.  A $1750 grant provided shelving and other supplies needed to organize the old records and artifacts going back to the beginning of the Keturah.

The Artisans Gallery Shop is manned by volunteers with annual sales of over $40,000.  In the past year, fifty volunteers contributed 6,000 hours of time to the MACK.  An average of 379 people visit the MACK each month, for a total of over 4,500 visitors a year.  These are amazing figures for a small gallery in a small town.

One upcoming event is the publication of a supplement to the popular MACK cookbook, including some recipes from the original Keturah, after whom the building was named along with popular recipes from “Read and Feed” menus.  Two other new offerings are a lecture series on the “Art of the American West” and Spanish lessons.  On November 30th, the town tree lighting ceremony will take place in the park behind the gallery and the MACK will hold a contest for the best holiday punch.  In March, the gallery will feature a dual show.  The main gallery will be devoted to a student art exhibit to celebrate Youth Art Month, and the Drummer Room will host Chris McMullen’s “Women of Color” exhibit.

It has been said that it takes a village to raise a child.  Ms Grizzard said, “We need to be that village.” The Lions Club made a donation to the MACK to support its efforts to bring the arts to all.
